In 1790, London had become by far the largest city in the world. In the British Empire, the sun never sets. The industrial revolution, which started in England, created one of the world's richest middle classes. Nobility gave more and more privileges to the common people, amongst others music, to prevent a revolution of the French kind. This served as the seedbed for the most brilliant and brisk music life in Europe on the turn of the century. Practically all musicians came to London to expose themselves to the cheers of the London public.

Chopin and the Belcanto

In the Chopin year 2010, Van Swieten Society shows the colourful and romantic music life of the early thirties of the 19th century, the life in which Chopin landed up. The Parisian salon, the Opéra, the fetishism of the virtuoso: this French programme has it all.
Touch the lightness and elegance of the Paris after Napoleon's wars by listening to instruments from that time, with a French piano as climax. Find yourself in a bonbonnière, where sections of works are sometimes being presented separately. Just like a soirée!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the master of the opera, the symphony, the piano concerto, the piano sonata... of anything to which he directed his attention. He set the new standard for all genres he took up. The Clarinet Quintet is one of Mozart's most beautiful pieces of chamber music works.

The family tree of all composing members of the Bach family begins in 1550 and runs to 1850. The unrivalled ingenius climax was, of course, baroque star Johann Sebastian, but this programme is especially about his four preclassical sons. They flew to all corners of their world and became famous in the service of kings and emperors.
